Mold left behind after Superstorm Sandy will run wild in Gerritsen Beach when warm weather comes, relief groups warn.
Storm-ravaged neighborhoods citywide face a health menace from mold lurking in improperly cleaned homes, the Daily News revealed in a front-page special report Sunday.
The danger is especially acute in the blue-collar waterfront community because nearly all its 2,000 homes were flooded during Sandy.
“Gerritsen Beach has the worst mold problem I’ve ever seen — and it’s going to get worse,” said Eric Klein, CEO of CAN-DO.org.

MILFORD – The stain on the bedroom carpet should have been a tip-off.
Debra and Ron Shusterman noticed the six-inch long brown spot during a walk-through of their new home in May 2008.
But the house at 170 Badger Hill Drive had served as a model for the recent phase of the Badger Hill development, and everyone thought it was just a coffee or soda stain.
Four months after the couple moved in, heavy rain from a nor’easter sent water into the house, damaging and discoloring the ceiling and wall of the second-floor bedroom, right near the carpet stain, indicating it was not spilled coffee or soda but the result of a leak.

Los Angeles, CA. – January 25, 2012 “As a Mesothelioma widow and asbestos awareness advocate, I was appalled and shocked to discover today that the 2012 United States Geological Survey (USGS) Mineral Commodity Summaries reported asbestos consumption from January through July of 2011 to be 1,100 metric tons; however, when comparing a previous report from January through July of 2010, asbestos consumption was reported to be 820 metric tons. This difference of 280 metric tons between January – July, 2010 and January – July, 2011 represents a 34% increase in consumption. In 1977, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) declared asbestos a human carcinogen, yet occupational and environmental exposure continues throughout the United States.

In this study, Wu and colleagues analyzed data from the Childhood Asthma Management Program, a trial that enrolled children between the ages of 5 and 12 with mild to moderate persistent asthma. The children’s homes were classified as having more or less than 25,000 mold colonies per gram of household dust. A level greater than 25,000 is considered high for a home.

Mold toxicity is often the end result with constant exposure to mold of a toxic substance. A common misconception among allergists who are untrained in this type of toxicity levels in humans, which is technically not their area of expertise unless they have trained specifically in environmental medicine with their background in immunology, is to do general allergen testing. Most tests usually result in an unequivocal result, a 2+ or less. This induces some physicians to order allergy shots, regardless. These shots are absolutely worthless (and could possibly be harmful) to a person who has been heavily exposed to these mycotoxins as they are already in a state of toxicity. If anything, this could exacerbate the problem. Because many doctors are not trained in this field, they may try to “guess” at a diagnosis.
